Downsview opportunity

Letter to Toronto Star, July 15, 2024, by Carol Damioli

Re: Runway cleared for major development

The Downsview redevelopment plan is a perfect opportunity to create housing that really works for people. That will happen only if every housing unit in the complex is built using universal design, which is a series of accessibility features that make the unit suitable for anyone of any age or ability.

The units will not look institutional, and if accessibility is incorporated at the design stage, the units are not significantly more expensive to build. It’s fine to build for different income levels, but housing that’s affordable isn’t much use if a person can’t get inside it and can’t physically use it. Let accessibility be one of the social justice principles guiding this promising new neighbourhood.
